Three Reliable Ways to Find a Job in Hong Kong

Choosing the right channels can make your job search much smoother. Here are three options worth considering:

  • Labour Department: The department offers a comprehensive range of free services, from job matching to employment consultation. In addition to its main job centres1 , such as the Job Centres for the catering, retail and construction industries, the Telephone Employment Service Centre and the Vacancy Processing Centre, it also offers dedicated pages on Higer Education Employment2  and New Arrivals from Mainland China3 (內地新來港人士專頁).These resources cater to job seekers from different backgrounds. You can also take part in large-scale recruitment fairs that are held regularly, where you can submit your CVs on the spot and meet employers in person1 .

  • Recruitment Agencies4With their extensive industry networks and professional expertise, headhunting firms can help match you with roles that suit your experiences and career goals. Many of them handle exclusive job openings that are not publicly advertised, giving you access to high-quality opportunities through their recommendations. Recruitment consultants often contact suitable candidates directly through third-party platforms, but you can also approach them proactively, although the process may take longer9.

  • There are several online job platforms 5 designed for job seekers across Asia. Each has its own strengths, as outlined below.
    • JobsDB and CTgoodjobs are widely used by locals for their range of listings and user-friendly interfaces. JobsDB lets you set up “Job Alerts” for daily updates, saving both time and effort, while CTgoodjobs offers a wide selection of mid-to senior-level positions, particularly attractive to young professionals aiming to enter the finance sector.
    • International platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed also feature many Hong Kong-based positions. LinkedIn helps you build your professional image and connect with leading companies, giving you access to potential insider opportunities. Indeed’s global database allows you to search precisely for roles in Hong Kong that match your background and interests.

Preparing for Job Applications: Crafting a Standout CV

A strong CV is the key to securing an interview. When applying for jobs in Hong Kong, it is important to highlight the following points.

CV History6:Employers in Hong Kong tend to place more emphasis on a candidate’s practical skills and work capabilities than on academic background. Make sure to clearly list your professional skills, such as data analysis or leadership ability. Where possible, use specific examples to demonstrate your past work experience and quantify your achievements, such as helping your previous company increase revenue by 20%. If you're learning Cantonese or already have some proficiency, be sure to highlight it, as it could be an additional advantage.

Cover Letter7,8:Aim to keep your cover letter between 100 and 150 words. Begin by expressing your genuine interest in the company and the position. In the introductory paragraph, focus on how your strengths align with the job requirements. If your former supervisor or employer is willing to act as a referee, include this information and provide their contact details so that HR can follow up to learn more about your work and professional abilities. Conclude your letter with a brief statement expressing your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Interview Tips: Showcasing Your Unique Value

An interview is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate what makes you stand out. In Hong Kong’s workplace, employers place great importance on intercultural communication and adaptability. As a professional who has recently moved to Hong Kong, you can highlight the advantage of combining your Mainland expertise with an international outlook and emphasise your understanding of both markets’ business environments and operating norms. This cross-regional perspective can be particularly attractive for roles that involve Mainland-related business. Preparing in advance by researching the company and reviewing the job requirements will also help you tailor your responses and make a strong impression during the interview.7

Job hunting is a process that requires patience and careful preparation. Beyond mastering these essential techniques, maintaining a positive attitude is equally important. We wish every new talent arriving in Hong Kong success in finding a rewarding role and fulfilling their career aspirations in this vibrant city.
