When faced with an unexpected illness or accident that requires hospitalisation, the financial burden can often add stress on top of health concerns.
Under traditional medical insurance, patients usually need to pay the full medical bill first and only claim reimbursement afterwards, which may create short-term financial pressure.
The Medical Expenses Direct Billing Service (commonly known as “cashless discharge”) allows you to avoid upfront payment. Eligible medical expenses are settled directly between the insurer and the medical provider. But what exactly is cashless discharge or deposit-waiver admission? How does the application work? Here is a clear, step-by-step guide.
Cashless discharge means you do not need to pay the full hospital bill at the time of discharge. The medical provider submits eligible expenses directly to the insurer for settlement, easing the financial burden during hospitalisation.
Prudential Hong Kong’s Medical Expenses Direct Billing Service* allows customers to enjoy direct settlement for hospitalisation, day surgeries and designated diagnostic imaging tests. Customers only need to pay for non‑covered items and cost sharing portions, without paying the entire bill upfront.

Can All Medical Expenses Use Direct Billing?
Direct billing generally applies to hospitalisation or day surgeries involving larger medical expenses. Regular outpatient visits, general practitioner consultations, or pharmacy purchases are typically not eligible and still require pay‑and‑claim arrangements.
Please refer to your policy terms and medical network guidelines for the exact scope.
Can I Use Direct Billing If the Hospital Is Not in the Medical Network?
This depends on the policy. Some Prudential Hong Kong plans (e.g., “PRUHealth Premier”, PRUHealth Medical Plus, VHIS Prestige Plan, etc.) provide non‑network direct billing services. If eligible and pre‑authorised, Prudential may also settle costs directly with non‑network medical providers.
Handling Possible Shortfall Amounts
If there are non‑covered items or costs exceeding the benefit limit, the insurer will issue a shortfall notification.
Medical Expenses Direct Billing / cashless discharge can significantly reduce financial stress during urgent medical situations and allow patients to focus on recovery. If your medical insurance plan offers this service, it’s beneficial to familiarise yourself with the network hospitals, application steps and the H2P process in advance—so you can activate the service quickly when needed and enjoy a smoother medical experience.
