How does blood sugar level affect health?

Understand it effect to your health and how to maintain healthy blood glucose level.

Blood sugar level is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood, the normal blood glucose level should be less than 6.1 mmol/L. This level fluctuates throughout the day with the lowest level in the morning before breakfast. The blood sugar level either too low or too high may bring detrimental effect to our health.

Health Effect

Abnormal blood sugar levels may be an indicator of a medical condition. A potentially fatal condition called hypoglycemia may develop if the blood sugar level is too low. Signs include hunger, shakiness, dizziness, confusion, sweating, feeling anxious or weak. Sometimes brain damage is possible if condition persists.

On the other hand, whenever the glucose level in one’s blood rises high temporarily, it is known as hyperglycemia. When glucose level remains high for several hours, dehydration and more serious complications can develop. If the levels rise and stay high for days to weeks, diabetes should be suspected and must be treated. If the condition is unrecognized or inadequately treated for several years, it can damage multiple tissues in the brain, kidney, and arteries.

How to Maintain Healthy Blood Glucose Level?

 

To prevent hypoglycemia, a healthy person should have regular meals daily. It can help avoid starving and sudden drop of blood glucose level

To prevent hyperglycemia, the following tips should be observed:

  1. Maintain healthy weight by having a high fiber and low fat diet as well as having regular exercises. Physically active does not necessarily mean exercising at gym. Walking or taking stairs are good ways to adopt.
  2. Cut down or stop having sugary snacks like sugary drinks and cakes. Cutting these is a great step to maintain a healthy glucose level.
